Drugs and Prisons
Drug use and drug dealing have become key 'problems' in prison settings around the world. This collection of articles published in Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy between 2000 and 2021 showcases analyses of the 'problems' raised by drugs in the prison settings in various countries including Ireland, England and Wales, Denmark and Iran. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative methods, these articles examine the reasons people in prison engage in different types of drug use and dealing activities (both within prison and on release), various drug treatment approaches in prison and the challenges of implementing harm reduction interventions in prison contexts. The analyses illustrate the inherent tensions and contradictions between therapy/rehabilitation and punishment/control in the development of prison drugs policies and offer valuable methodological and theoretical insights.
