Journal overview

Published by  OUP from 2008.

The Institute of Scientific Information Journal Citations Report for 2005 ranks the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 23rd out of 37 journals in Biomedical Social Sciences and 16th out of 29 journals in Ethics (social sciences), with an Impact Factor of .507.

This bimonthly publication explores the shared themes and concerns of philosophy and the medical sciences. Central issues in medical research and practice have important philosophical dimensions, for in treating disease and promoting health, medicine involves presuppositions about human goals and values. Conversely, the concerns of philosophy often significantly relate to those of medicine, as philosophers seek to apprehend the nature of knowledge and the human condition in the modern world. In addition, recent developments in medical technology and treatment raise ethical problems that overlap with philosophical interests. The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy aims to provide an ongoing forum for the discussion of these themes and issues.

Peer Review Policy:

All articles published in the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy have undergone editorial screening and peer review. The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy is also committed to double-blinded review. However, the Journal recognizes that some circumstances make the latter unfeasible in practice, as when authors heavily cite their own work (a word to the wise). A statement concerning disclosure of possible conflicts of interest is contained in the Journal’ Consent Form.
