New Writing: The International Journal for the Practice and Theory of Creative Writing is a leading international journal in the field of Creative Writing Studies and publishes both critical and creative work.

Work accepted for New Writing is published both in paper and electronically. Through the global professional and creative services of the publisher, Routledge/Taylor and Francis, the journal sees widespread recognition and regular citation of its authors.

Articles submitted for publication can focus on any area of Creative Writing Studies including (but not limited to):

  • pedagogy, practice and research
  • the processes of creative writers, their drafts and completed works
  • the history of particular writing forms
  • analysis of particular creative works
  • diversity, equity and inclusion in creative writing and creative writing teaching
  • studies of creative writing in languages other than English
  • explorations of teaching in different contexts (e.g., high schools, the community)

In addition to scholarly articles, New Writing publishes:
  • stories, poems, works of creative non-fiction, novel extracts, writing for the stage or for the screen, and other creative pieces extracts from works in progress and discussions about themes and subjects
  • interviews with creative writers, publishers, editors, designers, booksellers

The Editor, Graeme Harper, also welcomes suggestions.

The New Writing Board includes, among others, Andrew Motion (UK), Paul Muldoon (USA), Janelle Adsit (USA), Jon Cook (UK), Mike Theune (USA), Jeri Kroll (Australia), Nessa O'Mahony (Ireland), Dianne Donnelly (USA), Katharine Coles (USA), Stephen Muecke (Australia), Stephanie Vanderslice (USA) and Robert Pinsky (USA). New Writing esteemed guest reviewers can be found in such countries as China, Brazil, India, Pakistan, in South Africa, New Zealand, and throughout Europe, and from many other parts of the world.

New Writing is published 4 times a year. The Editor and Editorial Board invite submissions at any time and in any area of Creative Writing Studies, as well as the submission of creative work.

Peer Review Policy
All submissions to New Writing are subject to double anonymized peer review, in most cases by two reviewers.

Authors can choose to publish gold open access in this journal.
