The International Journal of Human Resource Management (IJHRM) is very pleased to announce the annual David Lepak Award for Best Paper by an Early-Career Researcher in honour of the Journal's former Senior Editor-in-Chief (2013-2017), David Lepak. During his academic career, Dave was well-known for being a supportive faculty mentor for young scholars, always seeking to inspire students and develop their confidence to become successful researchers in HRM. IJHRM is proud to honour Dave's legacy of fostering HRM researchers in the early stages of their career with this Award.

To be eligible for the Award, the lead author must be within the first five years of the academic career. Authors are asked during the submission process to confirm whether they would like to be considered for the Award.

How the winning papers are selected

The Award is chosen by a committee of four IJHRM Associate Editors. Three AEs read the papers that would qualify for the award and each AE nominates three papers. The nominations are then ranked using a point system (6 points for first, 3 points for second, and 1 point for third). The fourth AE then independently assesses the shortlist and confirms the selection. The final ranking was unambiguous and all AEs confirmed that they were happy with the selection.

The criteria for the best paper are that it:

1. focuses on topics that are relevant for the mission of the Journal

2. challenges established HRM assumptions / concepts, and pinpoints problems

3. makes a novel contribution to theory and/or methods

4. is based on unique and rigorous research methodology

5. will change how we think about the topic in the future

6. will inspire discussions and further investigations of the topic

7. has been accepted in the reference year, e.g. accepted in 2019 for the 2020 Award.

2019 Winner: Stefan Joss, Anthony McDonnell & Ralf Burbach.
