Journal overview

Sustaining a broad international, global, and interdisciplinary scope, Feminist Modernist Studies (FMS) stresses theoretical, cultural, formalist, geographical, and archival approaches to feminist modernist writers and producers of art/culture over the long twentieth-century. Emphasizing modern women, gender, sexuality and feminist issues, the journal offers a much needed venue variously for ongoing work in the burgeoning, feminist areas of cultural studies and global, transnational studies; for the recovery of under-explored or “lost” women writers and producers of art/culture worldwide across all races and ethnicities; and for new developments in feminist critical theory--including feminist work addressing race, class, LGBTQ and disability studies, ecocriticism, transnational theory, “space” studies, anthropocene theory, “thing” theory, and post human scholarship.

Embracing the long twentieth-century, Feminist Modernist Studies’ purview extends from the 1870s to the early 1970s. The journal is not limited to women modernists, but welcomes submissions on feminist modernists of all genders and sexualities (LGBTQ). We also invite submissions on male modernists creating in relation to women, feminism, and theory, for example, through representations of the female body in literary, artistic and cultural productions, authorial/editorial collaborations, and influence studies.

At this time, we are inviting three types of articles:

  1. Original, academic essays of no more than 9000 words;
  2. Shorter position papers on the state of/future of feminist modernist studies in any area of 2500-6250 words;
  3. Submissions for our regular 'Out of the Archives' section comprising a formerly unpublished or untranslated work and introduction by the submitting author totalling no more than 9000 words.
