Journal overview

This interdisciplinary, cross-national journal provides a forum for disseminating and enhancing theoretical, empirical and/or pragmatic research across the social sciences and related disciplines. Reflecting the objectives of the Academy of Social Sciences, it emphasises the publication of work that engages with issues of major public interest and concern across the world, and highlights the implications of that work for policy and professional practice.

The journal publishes five issues per year, four of which are guest edited on specific themes with a fifth issue which is online only and open access (OA). This non-themed OA issue welcomes original papers from across the social sciences. The OA online only issue, published, from 2020 is in recognition of the fact that publishing is moving in a direction where all work is open, accessible, impactful and inclusive. Please note that authors can still publish on an OA basis in any of the themed issues

Contributions are welcome in any appropriate form, including critical essays, reviews of significant topics, qualitative or quantitative empirical studies, including case studies and large-scale statistical analyses. Well documented examples of social science in action, composite reviews of sets of books and other publications are also welcome. Papers will not normally be more than 5,000 to 7,000 words.

Proposals for themes that incorporate a variety of social science perspectives are welcome. They should be sent to the editor at

All new Contemporary Social Science non-themed OA articles (CSS Open) are immediately added to a dedicated online-only issue, CSS Open. CSS Open enables all readers, everywhere, to find the latest open access articles in one place.

All contributions will be anonymously peer reviewed to determine both academic excellence and the accessibility of the material to non-specialists in social sciences other than the authors’. All papers should include some indication of the implications for policy and/or practice.

Authors can choose to publish gold open access in this journal.
