Journal overview

Levant is an international peer-reviewed, multi-disciplinary journal of the Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL), a British Academy-sponsored institute with research centres in Amman and Jerusalem, and which also supports research in Syria, Lebanon and Cyprus. Levant welcomes papers dealing with archaeology and history (prehistory–Ottoman) from a range of disciplinary perspectives including anthropology, archaeology, environmental science, heritage studies and industrial archaeology. Established in 1969, Levant is published three times per year and includes both original research papers and short reports. While contributions to Levant should be in English, the journal actively seeks to publish papers from researchers of any nationality who are working in its areas of interest. Prospective authors are encouraged to contact the Editor in Chief, Dr Caroline Middleton, to discuss potential submissions. Email: [email protected].

Levant is interested in publishing:
a. articles of a thematic or synthetic nature which represent significant new research contributions.
b. research results that ask new questions or demonstrate new methods or approaches to evidence.
c. contributions that are theoretically informed and demonstrably engaged with wider research concerns.
d. presentations of new data where these will be of clear significance to the research community, that allow the development of important new insights, or will open-up new areas of discussion and debate.
e. short report, intended for the rapid communication of information that is likely to be of immediate interest to the wider research community.

Levant will not normally publish preliminary field reports, nor accept contributions that are primarily descriptive in nature. Extended reviews, critiques, or contributions to ongoing debates between specialists, where submitted, must provide sufficient contextual information to make these intelligible to a broader readership. They must also demonstrate why the issues concerned will be of interest to a wide section of the relevant research community.

Special Issues
Levant will publish both individual papers and groups of themed contributions (the latter as Special Sections or Special Issues). Researchers are encouraged contact the Editor in Chief to discuss ideas for future thematic sections or issues. Recent examples include: Artefacts Made Out of Bone and Related Materials: Raw Material, Manufacture, Typology and Use (Guest Editors Canan Çakirlar and Hermann Genz), Levant Vol, 48.2 (2016) and Ottoman Waterscapes: New Archaeological, Anthropological and Historical Studies in the Eastern Mediterranean, 1500 to the Present Day (Guest Editors: Stephen McPhillips, Astrid Meier and Annika Rabo), Levant Vol. 51.2 (2019).
