The Expanding Dynamics Between Somatics and Dance Education
The field of Somatics has certainly expanded since its moniker entered the lexicon in the 1970s. Integral to this growth has been the expansion of ideas within the encompassing Somatics container. The impact emerging from such evolution can be found across Dance Education settings, ranging from dance training and pedagogical strategies to esthetics and cognition. This collection of previously published articles brings together authors who collectively underscore the myriad ways Somatics can intersect with Dance Education. Some authors address specific practices used in their teaching, while others speak to their engagement with Somatics to support their teaching philosophies. With these possibilities, how Somatics has and continues to evolve brings to light the field’s ever-expanding dynamics with Dance Education. Please see additional articles on this topic in our 2002 Special Issue edited by Jill Green, Somatics in Dance Education, and the 2006 Special Issue, edited by Elin Lobel and Julie Brodie, The Application of Somatic Technique in the Dance Class. New articles will be added as they become available.
