Cogent Biology publishes all areas of the biological sciences; instead of focusing on one specific area, the multidisciplinary nature of Cogent Biology fosters an environment for cross disciplinary research connections, which are fundamental for scientific progress. Cogent Biology considers original research, review articles and short communications in any of the following branches of biological research:

Biochemistry & Structural Biology
All topics on biochemistry and structural biology are considered. This may include studies on the structure and function of biological molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids, the interactions and functions of biological molecules, the molecular structure and dynamics of biological macromolecules and how alterations in their structures affect their function.

Biotechnology, Bioinformatics & Computational Biology
All areas of biotechnology, bioinformatics and computational biology are considered. We welcome contributions dealing with biotechnological process development, well-conducted in silico studies and relevant process optimizations of interest to agriculture, pharmaceutical, bioenergy and other industries. The contributions may intersect with other life sciences disciplines such as functional genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, structure–function relationships of biological molecules, protein- and metabolic engineering, biocatalytic reactions, bioassays, biosensors, as well as biological remediation.

Cell, Molecular & Developmental Biology
Covers all areas of cell, molecular and developmental biology. This may include studies on the structure, physiology, growth, reproduction and death of cells, the processes by which multicellular organisms grow and develop, and the composition, structure and interactions of cellular molecules – such as nucleic acids and proteins – that carry out the biological processes essential for the cell's functions and maintenance.

Evolutionary Biology & Molecular Ecology
Covers all studies on the biological sciences concerned with the origin of life and the diversification and adaptation of life forms over time. We also welcome studies on the use of molecular genetic tools to study ecological questions.

Genetics & Genomics
Covers all topics in genetics and genomics research, both experimental and computational/theoretical. Includes studies with model organisms – from microbes to plants and animals – and human studies such as analyses of single genes, genotype–phenotype relationships, quantitative and population genetics, genome evolution, mutant screens, phenomics, genome sequences, gene regulation, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics, functional genomics, chromosome biology, medical genetics, epigenetics as well as methods, tools and resources.

Immunology
All areas of immunology are welcome, including cell-mediated response, innate immunity, autoimmunity and transplantation, cancer immunology, immunodeficiency, allergy, and clinical applications.

Microbiology, Parasitology & Virology
All areas of microbiology, parasitology and virology are considered including, and not limited to, eukaryotic microorganisms, prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea) and viruses infecting or interacting with microorganisms, including genetic, biochemical, biophysical, bioinformatic and structural analyses.

Neuroscience
All topics in neuroscience are welcome including, and not limited to molecular neuroscience, systems neuroscience, problems of the nervous system and related clinical studies, epidemiology, neuropathology, medical and surgical treatment options and outcomes, neuropsychology and other topics related to the research and care of persons with neurologic disorders. We consider primary research papers, reviews, opinion pieces and papers reporting negative data.

Plant Sciences
All areas of plant biology are considered including, and not limited to, plant development, hormones, root architecture regulation, functional genomics, resistance and plant biotechnology as well as their intersection with other disciplines such as ecology, and the environmental and medical sciences.

Pharmacology
Covers all aspects of pharmacology including, but not limited to, pharmaceutical formulation development, pharmaceutical engineering, novel drug delivery technologies, pharmaceutical preclinical development, regulatory science and emerging technologies in pharmaceutical development and industrial pharmacy.

Toxicology
Considers studies in all areas of clinical toxicology looking into the detection, evaluation and prevention of the toxic effects of substances that humans are exposed to. We also welcome studies on the development of new drugs, evaluating the potential toxic effects in preclinical studies, clinical trials and post-marketing studies.

Zoology
Covers all aspects of basic, comparative and applied protozoan and animal biology at molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, organismal, population, and community–ecosystem level. Papers covering multiple levels of organization and integrative approaches to study animal form, function, development, ecology, evolution and systematics are welcome.

Through open access publishing, our aim is to bring research and knowledge to the widest possible audience. The journal welcomes experimental, theoretical, applied and computational approaches. Translational and clinical research can be submitted to our sister publication, Cogent Medicine .Our editors, each a specialist in their subject area, assess manuscripts objectively and fairly and provide quality, constructive and timely peer review. Rather than accepting manuscripts based on their level of importance or impact, editors assess manuscripts objectively, accepting valid, scientific research with sound rigorous methodology. Article-level metrics let the research speak for itself?

What can you expect if you publish in Cogent Biology:

  • Immediate, free access to your article for anyone anywhere in the world
  • Rigorous peer review featuring constructive dialogue with experts
  • Fast publication on a state-of-the-art platform
  • Innovative article-level performance metrics
  • Global marketing and high production values
  • Authors retain copyright of their work
