Journal overview

*Please note that International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability (IJAS) converted to a full Open Access journal from Volume 21 (2023). Previous volumes will continue to provide access through a Pay to Read model.

The International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability ( IJAS) is the leading cross-disciplinary, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing the understanding and practice of sustainability in agricultural and food systems worldwide. It is clear that major challenges still face communities and countries across the world: food poverty is pervasive, biodiversity loss widespread, and the climate crisis is already influencing agricultural and land management systems. Agriculture plays an important role in shaping natural and social systems, both for the good and bad.Over 18 years and volumes of publication, IJAS has published more than 350 papers addressing positive transformations towards sustainable agricultural systems. Our priorities are to set out how transitions can be made: at farm, community, regional, national and international levels, and across whole supply chains. We are interested in critical appraisals of new evidence, and as well as new models of understanding. We are committed to the clear and consistent use of language and logic, and the use of appropriate evidence to substantiate practical and policy conclusions.IJAS thus aims to increase knowledge on what technologies and processes are contributing to agricultural sustainability, what policies, institutions and economic structures are preventing or promoting sustainability, and what relevant lessons should be learned. IJAS tends not to publish technical or experimental findings, derived from field or laboratory based studies, unless they explicitly and comprehensively discuss the sustainability aspects of the research. We encourage authors to submit papers from all countries and institutional contexts. Researchers and potential authors are encouraged to reference recent published papers to include the year of submission.Topics in IJAS include:
  • Agriculture-environment interactions (such as through agroecology and ecosystem services)
  • Agriculture and rural economy interactions
  • The role of social capital in agricultural transformations (including digital transformations)
  • Institutional and policy Issues, including novel policy developments
  • Technology, nano-technology, and bio-technology development, adoption and evaluation in sustainable agriculture
  • Food systems and food security
  • Sustainable pest and disease control
  • Application and management of biofertilizers, biostimulants and, bioinoculants in sustainable agriculture
  • Economies of sustainable agriculture

Please note, from 2023 the Print ISSN is not in active use as this journal is no longer published in print.
