Journal overview

The Journal of European Public Policy (JEPP) has established itself as one of the flagship journals in the study of public policy, European politics and the EU and aims to provide a comprehensive and definitive source of analytical, theoretical and methodological articles in these fields. Focusing on the dynamics of public policy in Europe, the journal encourages a wide range of social science approaches, both qualitative and quantitative.

JEPP defines European public policy widely and welcomes innovative ideas and approaches. The main areas covered by the Journal are as follows:

  • theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of public policy in Europe and elsewhere
  • national public policy developments and processes in Europe
  • comparative studies of public policy within Europe
  • the public policy interface between nation states and the EU
  • the EU: its institutions, political processes and policies
  • the EU as an actor in regional and global affairs.

In addition, JEPP publishes a Research Agenda Section and a Debate Section (edited by Michael Blauberger, University of Salzburg, Austria). Contributions to the Research Agenda Section are expected to review the state of the art in a particular field of interest and develop an innovative research agenda. The Debate Section comprises two or three brief articles, which take contrary or complementary standpoints on a common issue. The short debate format is meant to particularly encourage submissions on topical and controversial issues.

Peer Review
All research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymised refereeing by at least two anonymous referees. On rare occasion the Editors commission articles. These are subject to the normal refereeing process.

JEPP has long become a trademark in European Union studies. If you want to stay in touch with top scholarship on the European project, its problems and challenges, JEPP is a must-read!
Thomas Risse - Center for Transnational Relations, Free University of Berlin, Germany

’The Journal of European Public Policy, long a leader in the field of EU and European studies, is now stronger than ever, featuring cutting-edge work by scholars of ever-increasing theoretical and methodological diversity. On issues ranging from EU trade and foreign policies to constitutionalization and new modes of governance, JEPP’s recent articles and special issues represent state-of-the-art scholarship from leaders in the field, and required reading for every serious student of the Union.’
Mark A. Pollack - Temple University, USA

JEPP has increasingly established itself when it comes to state-of-the-art surveys as well as agenda-setting in the study of European integration. The Journal has put its marks on the emerging ’canon’ both in terms of theoretical ideas and empirical findings. Moreover, JEPP has provided an outlet not only for those well established in the field, but also for the men and women who will be the stars of tomorrow.’
Johan P. Olsen - ARENA, University of Oslo, Norway
